Why doesn't your Kickstarter actually say FUCK in the title?

EXACTLY!

Frank fought against censorship his whole career. but unfortunately, that fight's not over.

We tried, but we can't even name our Facebook page "Who the Fuck Is Frank Zappa?" And many major news outlets, including The New York Times, were unable to run our pitch video in which I ask – you know – "who the fuck is Frank Zappa?" In order to plant a flag for his legacy, preserve the Vault, and finally have this shot at telling his untold story, we're still subject to that censorship.

To be clear, the name of the documentary is still undecided. This is just the name of our Kickstarter.

But to be 100% clear, we completely agree with FZ himself, who said:

There is no such thing as a dirty word. Nor is there a word so powerful, that it's going to send the listener to the lake of fire upon hearing it.

Why are you crowdfunding?

A couple big reasons:

  1. This is how Frank would have done it: Outside the system.
And, in a way that maintains a direct relationship with his fans.

  2. I crowdfunded my last doc, Deep Web, and loved the community it created.
In this case, I’m even more excited about bringing those who loved FZ as much as we do on the wild ride with us from start to finish, and maybe helping more of you find each other.

  3. Traditional channels will take too long... and we don't have time to lose.
If we finance this doc in the traditional way, lots of archival material we don't use, and that doesn't have immediate commercial value, could stay unpreserved and remain at risk. Plus, it will take us way longer — maybe even years longer — to even get started making the film.
